English as an additional language in Irish primary schools guidelines for teachers

This document created for the Educate Together Schools, Ireland addresses the language and literacy needs of the child for whom English is an additional language in Irish primary schools. The phrase ‘English as an additional language’ recognises that English is the language of instruction to be used in teaching the child. English is also a language, which the child shares with his/her home language. The teaching of English will build on the language and literacy skills, which the child has attained in his/her home language to the greatest extent possible. It gives descriptions of children during the stages of early language learning, insights and helpful suggestions, which are applicable to language learners at this stage at any age.
